South African Currency

Currency and Foreign Exchange

South African currency works on the decimal system with one Rand equalling 100 cents.
Denomination of Rand notes:- R200; R100; R50; R20; R10
Denomination of Coins:- R5; R2; R1; 50c; 20c; 10c; 5c; 2s; 1c
The official currency of the Congress in South African Rand. Fluctuations in foreign exchange markets are reflected in new rates
daily when paying in South African Rand, please consult with your bank on the correct currency amount to pay.
Traveller’s cheques and foreign currency notes of all major currencies can be exchanged at any commercial bank. American Express
offices and most category A and B hotels have exchange facilities for guests. Fluctuations in foreign exchange markets are reflected
in new rates daily.

Banking Facilities

Banks are generally open from 09h00 to 15h00 Monday to Friday and from 09h00 to 11h00 on Saturdays. There are also cash dispensers located on the ground level of the ICC.

Facilities offered at the Main Congress Venue

Book Exhibition

The book exhibition will be located at the International Convention Centre (ICC), the functioning times of the exhibition will coincide with the congress times. Enquires to host an exhibition table can be forwarded onto the congress secretariat. Acknowledgement will be given to all sponsors and exhibitors in the congress programme.

Catering

For your convenience, there will be food stations at the ICC and DEC with the following for purchase.  Please note that the items below will not be available at UNISA.  There will however, be a cantene at which you may purchase food.

Childcare

The Local Organising Committee will contract a professional childcare firm, to offer childcare services to participants wishing to bring their children to the Congress. The service will be offered to children from the age of 2 to 14 years of age. The childcare facility will be in operation from Sunday 22 July to Saturday 29 July 2006 from 09h00 to 16h30 at the main congress venue. The fee for this service will be R125.00 per child per day, to cover meals and snacks. A kit containing detailed information on the services will be sent to parents of all children registered for this service. Should the number of requests for childcare not be sufficient, the service may be cancelled. Therefore it is very important to indicate on your registration form should you need this service, before 31 May 2006.

Internet Café/Cyber net Café

This will be available for consulting the congress programme at several points within the main congress venue.

Wifi System

The ICC has permanent hotspots and delegates can access the internet anywhere within the ICC. Delegates require wireless enabled devices such as laptops, PDAs and cellular devices and would have to acquire airtime vouchers from either the coffee shop or the PR desk. This is a pre-paid system with:-

R50 vouchers for 1 hour airtime
R90 vouchers for 2 hours airtime
R150 vouchers for 24 hours airtime

These vouchers are time-based and do not have expiry dates.

Equipment in Venues

Please be advised that ONLY overhead projectors will be available in the venues.  Should you require additional equipment please see AUDIO VISUAL tab on menu for additional information.

Please note that there will be no tables in the venues, only chairs set up in cinema style.

Medical Services

A travel clinic and medical services are available at the International Convention Centre (ICC).

Climate in Durban, South Africa

KwaZulu-Natal experiences hot summers and mild winters in the low-lying areas. In July the weather is generally sunny, but slightly cool. The average temperatures range between 22 degrees C and 28 degrees C.
Please note that the International Convention Centre is air conditioned for your convenience, and at times may be cool in the congress venues.

Time Zone

The time zone for South Africa is: South Africa’s GMT +2 hours.

Electricity and Electrical Plugs

The electricity supply in South Africa is 220/230 volts, AC 50Hz. It would be in your interest to purchase an International plug converter to enable your plugs to be compatible with the South African plug points. The plugs used in South Africa are standard round pin, 3 point, 15amp plug.

Insurance

Registration fees do not include personal travel or health insurance of any kind. It is strongly recommended that when registering for the Congress and booking your travel, that travel and health insurance policies be taken out. The Organising Committee and the Congress Secretariat do not take responsibility of any delegates failing to insure themselves. The Organising Committee and Congress Secretariat also accepts no liability for personal injuries, or for loss or damage to property belonging to Congress delegates, either during, or as a result of the Congress, please check the validity and upgrading of your own insurance for this purpose before leaving for South Africa.

International Travel to Durban, South Africa

The South African Home Affairs department will be working in conjunction with the congress to ensure that the issuing of your visa applications will be processed smoothly. Most countries do not require a visa to enter South Africa, however, check with your consulate on whether you will need a visa or not.

Should an invitation letter be necessary as part of the visa application requirements, please indicate this on your congress registration form.

Should you be travelling via Johannesburg International Airport to Durban please be sure to allow yourself enough time to pass through customs before your connecting flight.

Airport Welcome Desk

The Local Organising Committee will set up a Welcome Desk at Durban International Airport to welcome the congress delegates and assist where necessary.

Airport Transportation to and from Hotels

Transportation from Accommodation to Congress Venues

A transport shuttle service to and from Congress Venue for delegates staying in the following accommodation categories: A, B, C and D will be provided. Delegates who book accommodation at the University residences (category B) will be dropped off as close to the residences as possible. Should delegates make their own accommodation arrangements not listed in the A, B, C and D categories or will be making use of the B&Bs and Backpackers and wish to make use of the transport shuttles, they are welcome to do so, if they make their own way to the nearest Shuttle collection point. Shuttle timetables will be posted on the Congress Website closer to the Congress, and at the ICC and each Category hotel collection point.

Parking at the International Convention Centre (ICC)

Parking is available to delegates at a rate of R16.00 per day.  This must be paid in cash (in South African Rands) on departure at the pay point parking machines situated in the ICC car park.
