Welcome to South Africa Professor Dasarath Chetty and Pam Adams welcomed Professor Piotr Sztompka, president of the International Sociological Association at the Durban International Airport (today), and presented the ISA head with a package for the XVI world congress that gets underway with an opening ceremony at the Durban International Convention Centre this Sunday evening. The congress ends on July 29, by which time 4 000 papers would have been delivered on the “Quality of Social Existence in the Globalising World”. Picture: Marlan Padayachee The World Congress of Sociology Makes News The World Congress of Sociology is making news ahead of the 23rd of July 2006 Opening Ceremony by ISA president Professor Piotr Stompkza of Poland and other dignitaries at the Durban International Convention Centre where almost 3 000 delegates from all over the world will gather later this month. The International Sociological Association’s XVI Congress has already attracted local media attention with publicity in the print media and as well as radio interviews on the national broadcaster, SABC. The Congress was launched to the media at a press briefing and hosted by Local Organising Committee leaders, Professor Dasarath Chetty of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Professor Tina Uys of the University of Johannesburg. The press briefing-cum-lunch was well attended by print and radio journalists on Monday, 10 July 2006, in Durban. Subsequently, news reports were published in the Durban newspapers, The Mercury and The Daily News, and Professor Chetty also featured in radio interviews on Lotus fm, a popular SABC station and independent station, P4 Radio.
